Marcia's Poem of the Week 7.14.2023

Marcia's Poem of the week 7-13-2023 “The First Disciples”

Luke 5:1-11 5 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

BEING CAUGHT Luke 5:1-11

The world is in such a frenzy
Like winds white-capping the sea
We question our means and safety
And search for our place to be.

We're set to make life simple
And so many times we tried
But found no help in the temple
And in the desert we want to hide.

But the Lord removes us from hopeless
To set our sites on healing and love
He gives strength when helpless
While tenderly speaking of God above.

We need Him and He calls our name
And He pulls us from our strife
We cling to Him while shedding shame
And find in Him a new way of life.

Let the Lord recover you from frenzy
And from winds white-capping the sea
Let Him feed your heart and hold you safely
And you'll find the best place to be.

Poem of the week for my great grandsons: Jeremiah, Tobiah and Elijah.  10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”

GO FISH

Jesus went fishing
Not for fish but men
He called His disciples
To do the same as Him.
He didn't use a fishing net
Or favorite fishing holes
There was no waters edge
Just a great big sea of souls.
He went into the temple
To feed the unfed
He walked on the street
For the gospel to spread
He gathered up the hopeless
And healed the sick and weak
And gave strength to the helpless
And blessed the merciful and meek.
We too are called to take His net
Into the temple and the street
To offer help and healing there
Where anointing is made complete.
